My field, in very simple terms, is "how to write manuals for machinery and other products for the U.S. market".

As an attorney in California, a German engineer and someone who has both a very good feeling for langauge and its comprehensibility, or lack thereof, and someone how actually knows how to work with a wrench, I have knowledge and a perspective that only very few people have.

I have thoroughly studied the new ANSI standard Z535.6 and have written a 85-page German language brochure on the subject entitled "US-Produkthaftung, Risikominderung durch Anleitungen" (US product liability, risk reduction through manuals), which can be ordered directly from my publisher GFT Verlag on-line.

In October 2007 I was elected a member of the ANSI Z535 standard committee and the ANSI Z535.6 sub-committee. I am not only the only German but also the only attorney who is a member of ANSI Z535.

I also teach 2-day-seminars in Germany in which technical writers learn how manuals for the U.S. market have to be written to be usable, comprehensible, comprehensikve and in compliance with the requirements of ANSI Z535.6.

In essence, this is all about reducing the risk of product liability law suits alleging instructional defects or failure to warn. I deal with the manuals. If you have questions about warning labels to be placed on machinery or other products, I have found Clarion Safety Systems, LLC, the company which designed the label above, to be a very good resource and their employees to be very helpful and knowledgeable. The principal of Clarion Safety Systems, LLC has been a member of the ANZI Z535 committee since its inception in the eraly 1990s and is also a member of other committees that develop international labeling standards.

My main goal is to assist companies in my native Germany and other German speaking countries by advising them on product liability issues, evaluating and correcting their technical documentation, and most importantly, teaching them in the first place what they need to know to write proper manuals for the US market. All this is to minimize their exposure to expensive product liability law suits. Or as they would say: Verminderung des Produkthaftungsrisikos in den USA.

I concentrate is on product liability risks, correctly worded and properly placed warnings and safety information, comprehensibility from a technical and legal perspective for the average U.S. consumer or machine operator, completeness as viewed with the eyes of an American attorney, correct warranty terms and liability exclusion clauses, and elimination of risk factors arising from the written materials in general.

The cultural differences between Germany and the U.S. and the often totally unrealistic expectations of Europeans are major risk factors, which I constantly address.

If you manufacture any product in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, especially machinery, production lines, appliances or any products that are even remotely dangerous, and want to sell them in the U.S., you MUST know how to write manuals for the U.S. market.
